Iwill always remember Alva's deep voice and his serious way of stating his point of view.  He used to stop by the personnel office at the school district when I worked there just to have a brief chat about the ins and outs of school for teachers.  I really got a kick out of some of his quirky ways - hard to imagine his not being here anymore.  He was a character!

When I think of Alva, I am transported back to the First Prebyterian Church on Orange Avenue, during a Youth Sunday Service. We had all been assigned various parts of the service from scripture reading, taking up the collection, reading the announcements to the Junior Choir singing the anthem.

Alva was to read the scripture. He was very serious and the church was very quiet. About half way through, he must have leaned into the microphone while he read "Oh, God!" It echoed into the rafters and you could hear a collective gasp from the congregation. There were also a few nervous giggles from the background, which I am sure came from the Junior Choir! I got into a lot of trouble for laughing through the service, when I got home. This is my very priceless memory of Alva and a much simpler time!
